Offered With Love and Devotion

by Gaura Nataraja Dasa

In New Vrindavan we get a lot of visitors from near and far. Recently one such group of students came from Virginia. They were very open minded and nice.

They first toured the Palace and then they came down to the community garden, 40 in number and 3 teachers accompanying them. H.G.Tapopunja explained about the perils of modern agriculture and how it is causing cancer and other health problems. He explained that when food is grown naturally with natural manure like cow dung it is very healthy and is also good karma. This when offered to Krishna with love is the most precious offering and one can remain healthy both materially and spiritually.

They also danced to some nice Hare Krishna melodies by H.G.Kripamoya prabhu.

After the tour of the temple they were having dinner at Govinda’s snack bar. As they were having dinner I explained to the Reverend, the teacher accompanying them, that this delicious prasadam is prepared cleanly without onion and garlic. It is cooked by a devotee of Krishna after taking bath and praying for everyone’s well-being, food being the life of all. I told him that most of the vegetables used that day were grown here. Finally it is offered to Krishna with love and devotion and then eaten.

As I told this he was so enthused that he asked me to go to every table and explain this to the students. The students were so fascinated by this explanation and the fact that food the very form of sustenance could have such a deep meaning. As the students heard this they mentioned that they began to understand what it really means to pray before eating. Most of the students then began to converse and said they would try their best to remember God before they eat.

New Vrindaban Clinic Starts Up

All glories to Srila Prabhupada:

I have decided to begin two clinics a week beginning next week. Wednesday mornings, 9a.m.- 1p.m and Sundays, 2p.m.-6p.m., beginning August 10.

The clinic will be in the “old clinic” site and now a part of Tapahpunja’s organic farm college. (Next to garden)

All walk-ins are welcome. I encourage all devotees to enroll in my clinic program, beginning with a history, physical exam, and vital signs.

I want to begin gathering detailed info on each and every devotee, as this is vital in creating an ongoing quality healthcare system for our community. having comprehensive health info on all members of the community could easily be lifesaving in cases of emergencies.

A survey/questionnaire will be available to all devotees to fill out soon.

We need 100 percent cooperation from all devotees in order to create a first class comprehensive medical system for our community.

Thank you,
dr. nick

Deconstructing the Bahulaban Barn

The New Vrindaban managers have determined that the Barn at Bahulaban is not repairable and needs to be deconstructed. This is scheduled to begin happening sometime in September 2011.

As this is a historic structure, we want to give the devotees who worked and lived in it a chance to say good bye and have a last look, or even to take a piece of it as a memento. For example, one devotee has asked if he can have a board from the room his son was born in.

As you may or may not know, this was one of the first buildings built in New Vrindaban at Bahulaban and certainly the most ambitious project to be tackled and brought to completion to that point. It served as shelter for both the cows who lived downstairs and the devotee families who lived upstairs.

In the 1970s and 1980s many devotees also worked there caring for the cows and demonstrably showed that Srila Prabhupada’s instruction that cow protection should be the main business of New Vrindaban was taken seriously. We would like to recognize and honor that rich history. Any materials that can be salvaged from the Bahulaban Barn will be used in the construction of a new barn for oxen so it will not perish but be reborn.

We would like to collect memories of the life at the barn and compile them for posterity. Included in this would be stories and an attempt to make lists of all the devotees who lived and worked there. For example, Radhanath Swami was a cowherd boy there and hand milked many cows. Our goal is to create a list of as many residents as we can remember, devotees who cared for the cows, and maybe even a special list of those children who were literally born there.

Anyone interested in helping to compile these lists and historical accounts please contact Madhava Gosh: gourdman@ecov.com.

We plan to hold a special ceremony at the Barn before deconstruction begins, at a time yet to be determined, but not earlier than Labor Day.

Adventures in dating at the Palace of Gold

Adventures in dating at the Palace of Gold
By Dina Z. Colada
POSTED: June 29, 2011

I have traveled all over the United States and have been on dates with men from almost every state. But I have never had such an amazing date as the one at the Palace of Gold. I normally don’t drive on a date, unless I’ve never met the chap, then I drive myself to meet them. But on this special day, I made an exception. This is weird. I drove, I bought my date dinner, and even took him shopping.

We ended up heading north through Pennsylvania and heading west toward Wheeling. We bypassed all the goodies in Wheeling and headed to Moundsville to — guess where? The Palace of Gold of course! I don’t think there’s much else there. But it was well worth the drive. I’m a pretty spiritual pop tart, so it was a great place for me to spend a day out.

I could feel the excitement building as I was heading down a winding country road and came upon the sign peeking out from behind the trees that read Prabhupada’s Palace of Gold Krishna Temple: 4 miles. Oh goodie, only four miles to go. We headed down a cracked asphalt road that led to a fortress-type wall with cast iron flowers in the windows.

We strolled down the gravelly pathway toward the shimmering gold palace. If there was a palace competition, I believe it would come in first place, and not because it’s in West Virginia. It’s embellished with real gold, five pounds of it, I hear. Even the doors to the bathroom were stunning, elaborately carved wood.

I did some trick photography while I was there. I got a shot of my date holding one of the golden turrets in the palm of his hand. Too cool. Giant green lion statues greeted us at the palace entrance. There were also decorative peacocks that were beautiful, but they were not as stunning as the real peacocks roaming the grounds. There were paintings in the palace that would rival the ceilings in the Sistine Chapel. And the intricate stained glass surrounding the entire palace was some of the best I’ve ever seen. Some of the panels had over 1,500 pieces of glass and crystal.

Devotees to Krishna built this amazing palace for Prabhupada, the man who brought the Krishna movement to the West.

After our tour, we roamed the spectacular rose garden that was fragrant and in full bloom. The clouds were rolling by the lily pond and meticulously landscaped grounds as we headed to the restaurant. We shared the Vegetarian Thali lunch, it was hot and spicy, so we had it with fresh squeezed carrot juice. Mmm Mmm Mmm.

We headed to the temple and saw Hare Krishna followers in orange saris wearing wooden bead necklaces. As we entered there were devotees sitting on the floor of the temple, and it looked like they were ready to sing the mantra: Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare. Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. George Harrison of the Beatles, the Broadway play Hair, Stevie Wonder, Husker du, the The Thievery Corporation and many other musicians have made this mantra famous.

I think the 20-foot tall elephant statue was spraying water into the clouds to give the earth some rain, after we visited the temple. On our way to the car, I was overlooking a pond. That had a 40-foot statue of beautiful blue Krishna and his female counterpart, Rama. Hmm, I’ve never gone out with a guy that was 40-feet tall or blue. If you know anyone like that, please drop me a line: dinazcolada@gmail.com or sign up for my email list at dinazcolada.com.
