June 19th: 24 Hour Kirtan & A Day In New Vrindaban

On June 19, New Vrindaban will host a 24-hour kirtan, and will offer discounted admission to Prabhupada’s Palace of Gold for participants of West Virginia Day.

New Vrindaban’s fourth annual 24-hour kirtan will begin at noon on Saturday, June 19, and ending at noon on Sunday, June 20. Kirtaniyas include Sivarama Swami, Madhava (Switzerland), Gaura Vani, Ananta Govinda, Acyuta Gopi, and Amala Kirtan. For more information about the 24-hour kirtan, contact (304) 843-1600 or mail@newvrindaban.com.

Also on June 19, the Palace of Gold will be one of eleven tourist attractions participating in the Marshall County West Virginia Day Tour. The West Virginia Day Tour offers free and discounted admission to tourist attractions throughout Marshall County. People who visit at least five attractions are eligible to win a 32″ flat-screen TV, Apple iPad, and two four-day passes to Jamboree in the Hills.

West Virginia Day is an opportunity for Marshall County to showcase its local tourist attractions, restaurants, and shops. “The Palace of Gold is excited to be part of Marshall County’s tourism committee,” said Malati Dasi, one of New Vrindaban’s GBCs. “With eleven tourist attractions participating in West Virginia Day, Marshall County is set to become a destination of interest in North America.”

“The Palace of Gold Rose Garden will be in full bloom for West Virginia Day,” said Malati. “People can visit the rose garden anytime and walk around the Palace exterior, free of charge. There is an admission fee, however, for a tour of the Palace interior. But during “The West Virginia Day”, we will offer discounted admission for tours of the Palace interior.”

The Palace interior is decorated with thirty-one hand-made stained-glass windows. Fifty-two varieties of marble and onyx were imported from Europe, Asia and Africa to create the marble floors and walls. All the furniture is carved teakwood from India. Under the thirty-ton main dome is a 4,200 piece crystal ceiling. “The Palace is the ‘Taj Mahal of the West.’ You do not have to visit India – India has come to Marshall County. The Palace is drawing visitors from all across North America.”

For participants of West Virginia Day, admission to the Palace of Gold will be discounted to $5 for adults and $2 for children.

Each year the 24 Hour Kirtan gets bigger and better. The first 24 Hour Kirtan in 2007 was just a group of friends coming together to celebrate the chanting of the Maha Mantra. Now in it’s fourth year, the 24 Hour Kirtan has become one of the largest kirtan events on the East Coast.

In an effort to maintain the quality of the festival, facilities and meals, the organizers have carefully decided that a suggested donation is required to cover the costs and expansion of the festival. Please know that the festival is open to all, and no one will be turned away and everyone will receive meals/prasadam. We will require everyone to register and obtain a wrist band, but you have the option of not contributing anything and getting in for free.

The 24 Hour Kirtan is a not-for-profit event which means that after production costs such as travel, meals, sound systems, promotional supplies, accounting etc. are covered, any funds left over will be used towards next year’s 24 Hour Kirtan. If there is a considerable amount of left over funds we hope to reduce the suggested donation next time. We also would like to contribute a donation to the 24 Hour Kirtan in Vridanvan which is a festival 365 days a year.

You can view our working budget (PDF) to get a sense of what it takes to put on this festival. We will post a Profit & Loss statement after the festival for full financial transparency. If you have any questions about the budget or financial structure, please email us here.

Please note that your registration fees DO NOT include accommodations. To find and book accommodations click here.

New Vrindaban Hosts North American Leadership Conference

by NV Communications

This past weekend, 45 administrators from 40 Hare Krishna centers met in New Vrindaban for the semi-annual North America Leadership Conference for the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). ISKCON was founded in 1966 by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. As ISKCON’s first generation of leaders reaches retirement age, the organization is planning a smooth transfer to the next generation.

Ali Krishna devi dasi of Gainesville, Fla., is one of the new young faces in ISKCON leadership. The Buffalo native joined ISKCON in 2006 in New Vrindaban, and lived in the community for nearly one year. “I was 25 years old at the time, and I wasn’t satisfied with my life,” said Ali Krishna. “Although I had lived in agricultural communities before, I had never lived in a God-centered community. I later moved to New Vrindaban and spent nearly one year here.”

In 2008, Ali Krishna became the Director of the newly formed Institute for Vaishnava Studies (IVS) at Krishna House, a student housing facility at the University of Florida, Gainesville. Krishna House allows students to simultaneously pursue spiritual life and a secular education. The Institute provides education in the ancient science of bhakti yoga, or devotion to God. “IVS is an unqualified success,” said Ali Krishna. “This past school year, Krishna House was filled to capacity. We had 20 full-time undergraduate and graduate students in residence. Next year, half the students will be coming back.”

Ali Krishna was part of a panel that discussed innovative outreach strategies. Many of the other panelists were also young people who are successfully reaching out to youth. “I felt comfortable at the conference,” she said. “Quite a few of the older people told me that they felt inspired to see a young woman in a leadership role.”

New Vrindaban Community is located south of Moundsville – Wheeling, off Route 250.
