Green Building Workshop at New Vrindaban’s “Garden of 7 Gates”

The EcoV Green Building Project:
During this five-day workshop, we will build the foundation, walls and roof of a 200 square foot cottage. The skills you’ll learn will include how to prepare the site, rammed-earth tire wall construction, bottle wall construction and basic framing for window, door and roof construction.
As part of this workshop, you will receive detailed construction drawings for the cottage – a sleeping cottage design that’s easy to build and everyone will love.
The Workshop Agenda includes:
Sunday (May 12th):
Travel day/late afternoon orientation. Arrive at New Vrindaban (or your hotel or other sleeping arrangement) at some point during the day. Get accommodations set up by 4 PM, and then join Jay and the BRS crew at New Vrindaban to share in an orientation and conversation about the next five days. The discussion topics will include:
Site selection and preparation
Tire selection
Basic Earthship construction concepts
You will be sent confirmation of the evening’s activities early in May.
Monday (May 13th):
The Art and Science of pounding tires – all day
Concrete “half-tires”
Basic mixing of cobb for tire walls (Learning to mixing cobb by hand or foot)
Tuesday, (May 14th):
More tire pounding – we have to get to the top of the wall
Installing the sill plates and locking it all together
Basics integrating of windows and doors into the structure
Window and door framing/installation
Water issues (keeping everything dry)
Wednesday (May 15th):
More tire pounding
Framing the roof
Decking the roof
Covering the roof
Thursday (May 16th):
The theory and practical uses of can/bottle walls – capping the top of the wall
Cobb integration into rammed-earth tire walls
EVENING: Celebration vegetarian potluck. Please feel free to bring any preparation that has no meat, fish, chicken or egg products. Please also note:no cigarettes or intoxication of any kind allowed on the property.
Friday (May 17th):*
Finish up tire pounding and bottle wall construction
Finish up tire wall cobbing
HOUSING:
MEALS: Meals may be the real treat of the workshop and worth the price alone (you may be tempted to just come to dine – skipping the workshops all together). Breakfast and lunch are included in the cost of the workshop. We will dine on lovingly prepared vegetarian food prepared by members of the New Vrindaban community. Evening meals can be purchased at the restaurant on site or in Moundsville (about a 25 minute drive).
On Thursday evening, after the workshop day there will be a potluck. Bring some local food or product from your region to share on this fun night, and prepare to celebrate all of your contributions during the week.

Options include:
Shared room with an adjoining bath at New Vrindaban (total cost for workshop, breakfast/lunch, and shared accommodations $600). Bring your own tent and camp on site ($500 includes workshop and breakfast/lunch). Regular accommodations available through lodge at 30% discount.
