About Us

What is “Brijabasi Spirit?”

A “Brijabasi” is a resident of Vrindavan, India and of New Vrindaban, USA. Therefore it is appropriate that the magazine for the New Vrindaban Community is entitled “Brijabasi Spirit.” The concept is best summed up in the following quote from Srila Prabhupada: “Agriculture and protecting cows, this is the main business of the residents of Vrindavan, and above all simply loving Krishna.” From this we can understand that the more we connect with the land, cows and Krishna the more we exemplify the Brijabasi Spirit.

A Brief History:

The Brijabasi Spirit first emerged in 1974 as a mimeographed 10 – 12 page newsletter which was stapled together. By 1977 it had become a 20 – 30 page magazine which included black & white photos. The issues catered to the community residents and copies were also sent to North American temples. From 1980 to 1982 the magazine added a color cover, and by 1983 it had evolved into a glossy magazine with a sophisticated layout and color photos throughout.

By the late 1980’s the magazine had returned to a simpler format. In the 1990’s it appeared as a one or two page newsletter. In 2006 it migrated online, in the current form you see here. In 2013 it made the leap to Facebook and has a page there as well. For regular info and updates, we invite you to also visit and “like” the Brijabasi Spirit Facebook page!
